About the Poem

Being a minority, this poem illustrates my life and what I went through growing up "different". Racism, in any form, is a realistic and horrible way of thinking. I felt I was literally tortured by these people that consistently ridiculed me because of my skin color. Discrimination is a true problem, yet I feel one should not hide behind the fear of racism, but instead speak out. This is what I did with this poem and I can only hope that indeed these "juvenile names" that I was called, may one day not exist at all.

Juvenile Names

I've washed away the evil names that others gave me.
From their lips trying to destroy my dignity.
Burning through my innocence.

Sculled through my ears - like a demonic chant
Like witches...
casting hexes, wanting to destroy their victim.

Why did you call me those names??
Why did you degrade me until I believed I was

worthless??

Infantile cries escaped your mouths
as my self worth escaped my soul-

You were vultures wanting to leave me with only a shell
You almost succeeded-

Yet I have removed your curse.
