About the Poem

Some things in life have a very profound effect on us, and sometimes our lives are never the same after adverse relationships leave us empty and alone. Here, I reveal my pain and emptiness after the loss of the love of my life, a large part of which still haunts me today.

Imagination

Locked in my cage, I stare at the emptiness;
this very emptiness possesses my soul -
we are one.

The months pass, as do the years,
yet as time progresses, it loses all relevance.
I sit here trapped in a recurring nightmare, never to awaken.
I feed on my own self-pity -
I never hunger. I merely exist,
captive in this asylum, biding my time;
my sole gratification, inebriated isolation.

The door to my cage is ajar, as is often the case,
yet it's pointless to leave;
each journey leads me back
to this God-forsaken realm of suffering and despair.

Long ago, I was free;
I remember faces, smiling faces.
A different me, in a different time -
it was a time of fulfillment, of togetherness, of love.
Then one day the fantasy ended, and I was here . . .
but enough about the past; I must face my reality.

Distant voices race through my head,
as I stave off insanity.
But this time, the voice is real.
Unsure of its origin, I feel my soul is not as cold; my burden lighter.
Though I smile, I soon shiver in frustration.
Tears stream down my cheeks,
as I cannot deny that the other voice is my own,
as my rationality succumbs to my imagination.

your poem has touched me, i can relate so well--after bouts of depression and a suicide attempt i finally realized the person i was longing for was myself. i have found my outlet in writing, and it seems you have too---great piece!

i cant believe i actually found it. ive been trying to find something to describe how i feel (i lack the ability to put it in words myself). what is written there fits me almost to the "T".

I can't say I can exactly relate, as other people said, but I can say that it's very touching and makes a person atleast feel like they can relate to it. I wish I could express myselfd the way you have, you make it look so easy to take words from your head and put them in a logical structure where they actually make since to someone besides the writer. I guess that's the problem I usually have. But I try. ~julia davenport

i know just how u feel, i feel dat way right now, just 2 months ago i lost d love of my life, nd this poem really touched me.

The poem is indeed very moving and dramatic. in keeping with this those people that have left a comment cannot relate to how this person feels at all. it is how you feel and what the poem makes you think about. i too have lost and loved and am empty, but, i do not believe that i am/think the same as the author. for all i know the author could be talking about a goldfish or a recurring day dream. make the people that ae close to you all thw more important for you never know what you will be like the following day.
