About the Poem

I've always been a morning person. "Up and at 'em", as they say. My daughter, Stacie, is quite the opposite. She spent many a late night keeping me awake when she was a child. Now, it's her turn. Her little Cassandra has an agenda of her own. So, in loving revenge, I dedicate this to you, Stacie . . .

I really liked it. Being a mother myself I felt it was a nice reflection of what being a mother really is. Thanks it reached my heart.

Cassandra At Three

The break of dawn invades my pane;
The morning sun's my bane.
One eye peeks out;
The other shouts,
"To sleep - We both must feign! "

Just as I doze, I feel a shake -
"Oh, Mommy, Mommy, I'm awake! "
I hear her call my name . . .
Too early for this game,
For I must sleep for goodNess sake.

Upon my bed she jumps with glee,
For after all, she's only three;
But this Mom needs more rest
Before the next day's test.
"Mommy, Mommy, play with me! "

I pull the covers overhead -
I settle deeper in my bed,
And say, "I'm sorry, Dear,
. . . There is NO Mommy here".
I close my weary eyes instead.

When I peek out, her face I see,
And sounding grown she says to me,
"Would you look at yourself?
. . . You ARE Mommy! "
I had to grin from ear to ear
And face today with newfound cheer.
