About the Poem

Jax was my brother and he died two months ago while climbing. He loved life and always knew he could fall at any time. He always said "better to die doing something you love rather than something you hate" I wrote this to try and give his friends some comfort.

For Jax

I look up at the prodigious escarpment before me
The twisted pagan face I need to tame.
To sit like a god at its zenith
To beat the rock diabolic
And as I stand with body fearfully shaking
Thoughts of calamitous death awaken every instinct
And my vice-like hand takes a hold
Doggedly I pull my aching body higher
Adrenaline invades every part of my being
Giving me strength to carry on
On this long lonely climb I am divinity
My Devil the fall waits with open arms
Then fate deals me the dead mans hand
And I make my fast descent
And I think only of my friends and family
No death scream departs my lips
I have lived the way I wanted to live
And died the way nature has decreed
But do not make me the excuse for tears shed
Remember I was with you all who shared my life
And all who passed through it now have a piece
Carry it always, for I shall carry you with me.
