What is a love poem? Is it necessarily a poem about romantic love? About romance? Marriage and commitment? Or is a love poem something else entirely? In a recent short story I wrote, a writer is told by a young critic that he doesn't understand love. "It's neither noble nor eternal, as you would have your audience believe," she says. "Nobody understands love," the writer admits. "It seems to be Universal. Timeless. Yet, it's also very individual, filtered by our own lives and expectations. I don't understand love, and can't understand love, because it's a different thing for each of us." These love poems are Universal. Timeless. And yet very much a different thing for each of us. We hope you enjoy them...

| Psychologists, like B. F. Skinner, contend that all humans are driven by the same basic needs in life. I contend he could have said it with more passion… | |
| On Marriage | Ron Carnell |
| I haven't had a lot of success with marriage, though it certainly hasn't been from lack of trying. Still, in spite of a dismal track record, I seldom hesitate to share my thoughts. | |

| My First Love | Ron Carnell |
| I wrote this shortly after my first marriage, a long long time ago, trying to describe the evolution of love. From my First Love to what I thought at the time was my Last. Silly me. | |

| Over 30 years ago, I wrote a poem describing what I wanted out of life. In some ways, I guess this epitomizes the American Dream. I never found the Dream, but I haven't stopped looking. | |
