About the Poem

This poem was inspired while I was working a new job, away from my family. In my office late, with rain falling on the window, I heard a train pass.

The poem was written as a non-classical Japanese Tanka. I kept the 5 lines but disregarded the classical 5-7-5-7-7 meter. As a poet, I enjoy the challenge of packing as much meaning as possible into the least number of words.

This Night

Through the falling rain,
a freight train mourns.
Such is my heart,
without you,
this night.
