About the Poem

I try and take an object and compare it with love. Sometimes how it is the same. Sometimes how it is different. The object doesn't matter as much as the relationship they share.

This one involves an ox.

Love Of An Ox

big and dumb, tried and true
not sure of the course to take
or the decisions to make

puts his head down and plows forward
making mistakes, making error
but making progress all the same

needing, wanting to go on
if for no other reason than to please
to let the one who takes care of him know
know that even he is capable of love

love for the job that love is
love for the act of carrying on
love for the act of finishing.

if not him, then who

love is a beast, but not one of burden
if the yolks are to keep and restrain
if they are not a bond of love
then shed them, find a new one
a new beast that isn't a burden
to walk through life with love
