This poem came across the wire without a description of the feelings or circumstances of the author. The email address wasn't valid, and my attempts at contacting the author proved in vain. I think these descriptions are an important part of understanding the person behind the words, and normally, I would have moved this poem and message to my 'unusable' folder and hoped the author would try again.
But I didn't do that, obviously. This deceptively simple poem continued to haunt me, and ultimately I knew I would have to post it. The meter is less than perfect, the rhyme scheme unusual, but its strengths lie not in its craftsmanship. Rather, its strength -- and the reason it haunted me -- comes from its very simple, almost child-like innocence in portraying young love. Poetry, after all, isn't about meter and rhyme. It's about Truth, and these words hold a Truth all of us have experienced.
Sometimes, when I need a friend,
You're always here for me.
You say, when I am ready,
That you can set me free.
What is it that I don't see,
I know you're in love with me,
I don't know what to say,
I don't know what to do.
This all seems so very new,
But deep down, I know
That I want to be with you.
