About the Poem

This is a mostly true story. Inspired by a beautiful friend, who touched my life briefly several years ago, then moved away....

Felicia

Felicia bounces in the nude
because her alimony checks
bounce at the bank.

Her ex-post facto
husband buys addiction
instead of baby diapers.

Felicia feeds three
small children. It's okay --
she wants three more.

She pours her youngest
into my arms, checking
to see if I'll make a good
father -- just in case.

Felicia loves her bearded
boyfriend, who drives
his Harley so fast
he gets away from her.
I know hardly anything
about Harleys'. Felicia
knows more than she's
willing to tell.

Sometimes she dances
to church wearing clever
clothes to conceal certain
parts of her personality.
I tell her she dances
better in the nude.

If Felicia had a dollar bill
for every broken erection
she stuffs into her purse....
I help her pay
for her husband's diapers.
