Passions in PoetryAl Aaraaf
by Edgar Allan Poe

"Al Aaraaf" is a lyric poem written in response to the night sky.

The poem is about Nesace, a name for Beauty's spirit, who lives on a star called Al Aaraff. She is immortal and shares the star with a spirit, Ianthe, and a mortal man, Angelo. Ianthe and Angelohave a passionate relationship and fail to carry out their duties as directed by Nesace. This failureof duty bars their entrance to heaven and forces them to remain on the star. The poem suggeststhree motifs with the first being the relationship between man and God and man's entrance toheaven. The second motif is the star Al Aaraaf as a celestial Eden with its inhabitants beingtragically flawed. The final motif is the relationship between passion and duty. Necase's role inthe poem encompasses all three motifs, making the poem's storyline difficult to follow at times.
